Why do I need a water pump?
You don't! Gravity-fed water is delivered from a ground-level tank at a very low pressure. This may be sufficient for your needs. You may need a pump to provide the water pressure for delivering water to areas uphill and distant from the tank and for cleaning tasks such as car/house/window washing. A water tank pump can always be added at a later stage but will generally be less expensive if installed at the same time as the tank.
What pressure is produced by a water pump?
There is a great variance in water pump pressure (and price!). A pump should be selected based on the tank location, the intended use of the water tank water and the property characteristics. Water Tactics deals with a range of pump brands to ensure that we select the best and most economical unit for your requirements.
What happens if the water tank is empty?
This depends on the type of pump you install. Most of the pumps we recommend are fitted with an electronic controller which will automatically shut off when it senses that the water source is insufficient. This is known as 'loss of prime protection'. In the case of pumps which do not feature loss of prime protection, you will need to monitor the water in the tank and manually shut off the pump when the water is low. A water level gauge can be installed on the tank so that you are always sure of the amount of water in the tank.
Do I need to cover the water pump?
It is highly recommended that a pump is protected from situations where the pump may be subject to direct exposure to weather and water, especially in the case where in contains an electronic controller. This can be done by either locating the pump in a protected area or enclosing the pump in protective housing. A pump enclosure can be either constructed, adapted (e.g. plastic bin or crate) or particular pump covers are produced by some tank manufacturers. Pump covers are generally available in colours to match the tank.
Why is the water pump turning on and off when I am not using it?
This is referred to as pump 'cycling' and is not only annoying but also wastes electrical power. Cycling is usually casued by leaks in the water usage outlets e.g. taps, pipes, valves or debris blocking the full closure of the outlet. We can service your system to prevent this occurring.
